Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra introduces Magnetic Connect, a charging system that combines the convenience of a magnetically attached cable with a standard, fully functional USB-C port, an approach that 9to5Google’s Ben Schoon argues deserves wider adoption across laptops. Unlike a separate proprietary charging socket, the laptop’s right-side magnetic USB-C connection still supports ordinary USB-C cables, data transfers, video output, and compatible accessories, while the included charging cable attaches magnetically and releases easily. Schoon explains that strong magnets align and secure the connector, while its tapered edges help it slide into position, producing an experience reminiscent of Apple’s MagSafe without abandoning the familiar USB-C interface. However, the magnetic end depends on a compatible connection rather than fitting securely into an ordinary phone or other USB-C device. Microsoft’s support documentation adds an important compatibility detail: users can reverse the cable when using the Surface 140W USB-C Power Adapter, attaching the magnetic end to the adapter and using the conventional USB-C end to charge another compatible device. The laptop can also charge through any of its three USB-C ports, with its Magnetic Connect port supporting charging up to 140W. Microsoft describes the feature as the world’s first built-in magnetic USB-C charging connection on a laptop, incorporating it into a premium machine that launched with a starting price of $2,599 and availability beginning October 16, 2026. The practical tradeoff is that magnetic charging occupies one of the laptop’s three USB-C ports, although HDMI, USB-A, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack provide additional connectivity. Schoon’s broader enthusiasm centers on bringing this convenient design to less expensive laptops, while acknowledging that the space required for its magnets could make adoption in conventional smartphones difficult.
