Reddit Plans Account Requirements As Search Traffic Falls And AI Scraping Concerns Grow

Reddit is preparing to shift toward a primarily logged-in experience, potentially requiring accounts for much of the browsing that visitors currently do without signing in, although the company has not announced a firm global rollout date or clarified every restriction. According to 9to5Google, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit would begin testing the approach in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter of 2026, then use the results to shape a broader rollout. Huffman described the change as a way to improve personalized recommendations, increase engagement, provide better signals for advertising, protect Reddit’s content from unauthorized scraping, and respond to emerging regulations. However, the proposal does not necessarily mean every page will immediately disappear behind a login screen, as he also emphasized the importance of keeping the front page accessible and allowing visitors arriving from search engines or external links to view the linked content. Reddit is also rebuilding and rereleasing an incognito mode within its app, though the precise relationship between that feature and future account requirements remains unclear. The strategy comes as Reddit reports weakening search referrals, with 9to5Google citing a decline of more than one million referrals per week on average during the third quarter. Separate financial coverage published by The Globe and Mail adds that Reddit had 130.3 million daily active unique users during the quarter, including 76.8 million who used the service without logging in, while approximately 80% of revenue came from logged-in and app users. Those figures help explain the business incentive behind encouraging account creation, even as the company faces the challenge of preserving easy access to discussions that people discover through search.
